COURSE DESCRIPTION

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Picture 50km of trail running heaven, and you’ll have a pretty good idea of what’s in store for the Kosci50.

We’ve got some exciting new developments planned for the 2024 event, thanks to some newly finished trails in the area that we’re excited to take runners on, as well as taking learnings and listening to feedback from the 2023 event on what you liked and what you didn’t.

We had hoped to be in a place to be able to share these in advance of entries opening for 2024, however as is the way with events, we have to make sure we tick all the boxes before we release courses to the public, and we still have a few more boxes to tick before we can do that.

We want to be as open as we can about what you can expect for the 2024 event ahead of entries opening, so here’s what we can say for now:

  • Kosci50 course will be of a similar nature to 2023 in terms of distance, within 8% of the category distance
  • Total elevation gain for the Kosci50 will decrease by around 20% from 2023
  • Overall cutoff time will remain the same, and cutoff pace for all races will remain the same as 2023.
  • The number of Aid Stations on course will remain similar for all distances as 2023.
  • The finish line for all distances will remain at Friday Flat in Thredbo.
  • The start lines for all distances will be shifting in 2024 to new locations, all within the Snowy Mountains area.
  • We will be running shuttle buses for all distances to all start lines from Thredbo and Jindabyne – these will be available to book through your MyEvents account. All start lines will have plenty of parking for supporters.
  • The best places to book accommodation are Thredbo or Jindabyne.

Overall – the nature or vibe of the courses we’re trying to create will be the same – amazing scenery, happy trails, and ultimately a challenging but achievable event.

We are working closely with stakeholders to lock these in, and we hope to communicate these with you as soon as possible to help with your preparation and planning. Stay tuned for updates and we’ll share them with you as soon as we can!

KEY INFO FOR UTA50 RUNNERS

All the information you need to know before starting an extraordinary adventure.

CHECKPOINTS

The Kosci50 has checkpoints along its route, with differing levels of service and supplies. The Kosci50 checkpoints offer you the opportunity to refuel, rehydrate, see your spectators and prepare for the next leg of your journey!

DROP BAGS

A drop bag service will be available which allows you to have your own personal supplies (gels, food, change of socks, shoes, shorts, lubricant, etc.) available at the finish.
Read the rules on drop bags

MANDATORY GEAR

Every runner at Kosci will have to carry mandatory gear. The mandatory gear list contains what we believe is the absolute minimum to keep you safe during the event and in the Snowy Mountain’s unpredictable weather systems.
Read Mandatory Gear rules

TRAINING ON COURSE

The Kosci50 course is publically accessible throughout the year, offering the opportunity to train on course prior to raceday. However note that many sections are covered in snow in the colder months.

Please take care and give way to members of the general public when training on course.

START WAVES

START WAVES

The Kosci50 will start in 3 waves 5 minutes apart. These waves are self-seeded on race morning.

  • Wave 1 - expected finish time between 3:30 and 6:45
  • Wave 2 - expected finish time between 6:45 and 8:30
  • Wave 3 - expected finish time between 8:30 and 13:30

Please join the wave that best fits you, and follow signage and direction of staff on race morning.

SPECTATORS

We encourage spectators to get out on course and support their runners!

Spectators can see runners at many points along the Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko by UTMB courses. We ask that you please respect private landowners and do not cross any private property. If spectating on course, please respect runners and support crews and do your best to spectate in a supportive, safe manner. Any on course spectating (including at checkpoints) can only be moral support – no material or physical supporting is allowed for the Kosci50.

We ask spectators at Ngarigo Campground when supporting your Kosci50 runners - due to very limited parking at this location, please park responsibly and do not impede traffic or runners. We encourage you to support your runners at the start line, in and around the trails near Bullocks Flat Ski Tube Terminal, and at Eagles Nest Checkpoint.

For more helpful information please visit the Transport & Parking page and Spectators page.
